Matty Mullins, known for his role as the lead vocalist for hard rock band Memphis May Fire, has teamed up with Black River Christian to release his newest single “No Hold on Me.” Fitting into the genre of Contemporary Christian music, this song features a very different music style from Mullins’ work with his band. The song, upbeat and encouraging, features the inspirational lyrics “No more shackles on my feet / The devil’s got no hold on me / Jesus’ blood has set me free.

Why did you decide to start creating music?

Matty: I grew up in a very musical household. We didn’t attend a lot of sporting events, instead my mom would take us to concerts almost weekly! I remember getting a cheap acoustic guitar for Christmas when I was 6 or 7 & immediately using it to write. I’ve never really known anything else & I’m so thankful that God has continued to give me opportunities to create music.

What are your plans for music in the future? Where do you plan to go with your music and what is your goal?

I have a very different story than most artists in CCM. For the last 11 years I’ve been touring all over the world as the front-man for a hard rock band called Memphis May Fire. The band takes a lot of my time & we don’t have any intention of slowing down, but I will continue to write & record music for Christian Radio as well! I’m so honored to have the ability to release music in 2 completely different formats & my hope is that God will use it to bless listeners from all different walks of life.

What inspired your song “No Hold on Me”? What message do you hope listeners take from this song?

I battled anxiety & depression for half of my life & there are moments when it can feel like the darkness has an unshakeable grip, but Romans 8:38-39 says “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The lyrics in “No Hold On Me” are a reminder & a proclamation that Fear has no place in the life of a Christian. By the name of Jesus Christ who lives in us, we’ve been given authority over fear. If we’re starting to feel anxiety or fear creeping into our minds, we can rebuke this in Jesus’ name and find peace in the Spirit of God.

Do you have a favorite quote or verse that brings you hope or inspires you?

Exodus 14:14

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.

A verse I often find myself going back to is Exodus 14:14 which says “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” What a blessing it is to know that in times of worry or stress, God is fighting for us, & we are called to rest in that!
